THINKING ANTHROPOLOGICALLY ABOUT GENDER JUSTICE

HOW DOES GENDER APPLY TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE MOVEMENT?

The way that gender is looked at in the realm of climate change is greatly affected by the relation of power and the colonial gaze. The people who are seeing the consequences of climate change the most frequently are women in developing countries, in these countries women are often relied upon by many people to gather and produce food and water. This exemplifies gender intersecting with a relation of power. The power in this situation is not only held by men but also by the environment, because these people are so reliant on the environment the changes in it are impacting their normal ways of life.   The colonial gaze effects these women because in the media they are portrayed as people who are helpless and starving that need to be saved by people who live in western cultures. This gaze effects the perceived capability of the women living in these conditions. The biggest issue with the colonial gaze and the relation of power, is that it creates the idea that these women are not putting in the work on their own to make the necessary changes. In all reality women are extremely successful leaders in climate change because they have seen the direct effects and they understand the true importance of the cause.
